A Brief History
Bensham Grove has provided the
community with Adult educational
opportunities since the 1920’s. The
centre is a grade 2 listed building
and of great historical interest. The
centre was handed over to Gateshead
Council by the Spence Watson family in
1948 as a centre for Adult Education.
The centre offers over fifty
accredited and non-accredited courses,
parents & toddlers group, groups for
women, older people, families and
young
people, all taking advantage of the
warm friendly welcome.
There are advice and information
sessions, a family learning group,
Asian women's group, groups for young
men and women - a real centre of multi
cultural activity.
What’s on Offer?
The centre offers an expanding adult
education programme of courses in a
friendly and warm learning
environment. We encourage and welcome
local community participation and
partnership with local agencies. A
crèche is provided for some of our
courses by the Crèche Mobile Project,
please ask for details. Bensham Grove
is fully accessible to disabled
students; please ask staff for more
information. Bensham is an active
equal opportunities centre and no user
will be treated less favourably on the

sexual orientation or religion. New
members are always welcome.
