About us

Bensham Grove has provided the community with Adult Education opportunities since the 1920s. The Centre is an English Heritage Grade 2-listed building which was restored in 2014 and is of great historical interest. In 1919 Elizabeth Spence Watson bequeathed the house and it became a settlement. In 1948, the former Spence Watson house was handed over to Gateshead Council as a venue for Adult Education.

Every year there are a range of programmes on offer for formal and informal learning. This will include Adult learning providers, community interest groups, advice groups, groups for women, multicultural groups, sessions for older people, people with health issues; all taking advantage of the warm, friendly, multi cultural welcome.

There is also a workshops programme where people who want to participate in practical crafts can join a wide range of exciting and innovative tasters supported by North East Creative craft: a partnership of learning and creativity.

We encourage and welcome local community participation and partnership with other local agencies and organisations, such as GEM Arts. Bensham Grove is fully accessible to people with disabilities. Please talk to us about your access requirements.

Bensham Grove promotes equal opportunities and maintains that no user will be treated less favourably on the grounds of nationality, race, age, marital status, disability, culture, sexual orientation or religion. New members are always welcome.
